Frequently Asked Questions

Are you people crazy?  Can this really be done in one weekend?

We are completely sane and yes, indeed.  See those who have gone before. http://www.startup-australia.org/startupweekend

Who is the target audience for Start-Up Camp Canberra?

This event targets local University students (graduate and undergraduate) in the areas of business, IT, and graphic design.  The event will also attract angel investors looking for the next 'big idea' and also current and aspiring start-up company entrepreneurs.

Is this only for programmers?

Absolutely not!  This event is about launching a business, not just banging out a web application.  So, the groups need people with diverse skills, just like a real business, including marketing, sales and graphic design and usability.

What should I bring?

We recommend that you bring your energy drink of choice and your own laptop computer.  We will supply extra cables, powerboard etc, but you need to supply you own hardware and software.

Will there be food?

Every army marches on its stomach and thanks to the generosity of our sponsors THERE WILL BE FREE FOOD.  However, if you have special dietary requirements (e.g vegan, gluten-free) you will need to supply your own.   No alcohol can be consumed on the premises until our closing event on Sunday.

Can I still come along if I don't register?

Yes, but by registering we are able to communicate directly with you in advance of the event.  We are able to get a good idea of the types of skills we will have available on the day and, most importantly, we can make sure there is enough food and drink to keep you going.

Are we allowed to sleep?

Sleep is optional, but highly recommended.  You will have access to the venue until late on the Friday and Saturday. However, at some point, even your intrepid organisers will want to go home and sleep and you will be politely asked to leave and come back in the morning.

Who gets to keep the IP developed during the event?

To keep things as simple as possible, we recommend that each group member has an equal share to what is developed during the weekend.  However, we aren't dictators, so it is really up to each team.  We encourage teams to 'exit' their companies using an online website marketplace.  This model has been used successfully for the participants at Start Up Camp Sydney II.   The sponsors/organisers of Start-Up Camp Canberra will not take equity or commissions on sales.  If members of your teams earn money, it's yours to keep.  Not bad for a weekend's work, huh?

Who are the organisers and are you the same Lighthouse as the pub in Belconnen?

Start Up Camp Canberra is an initiative of Lighthouse Business Innovation Centre Ltd (LH).  LH is the Territory's newest not-for-profit business development centre.  Supported by Epicorp Limited and the ACT Government, Lighthouse's role is to 'shed light' on the commercialisation process through mentoring, referral and high-value events and programs such as Start Up Camp Canberra.

Start Up Camp Canberra is not in any way affiliated with Start Up Week End LLC (USA).   Start Up Camps are being held in Sydney and Melbourne. LH is in contact with those organisers to ensure continuity and best practise are transferred.

Lighthouse will not take equity in the companies that may form as result of the Start-Up Camp Canberra event or make any other claims on the IP developed in the course of the event.

(and, no, we are not the pub in Belconnen.  But, if you come see us, we might have beer www. lighthouseinnovation.com.au)
